One of the most successful tools of Social Thinking, Social Behavior Mapping offers a cognitive behavior strategy to teach individuals about the specific relationship between behaviours, others’ perspectives, others’ actions (consequences) and the student’s own emotions about those around him or her. Social Behavior Mapping is a visual tool that displays these abstract concepts through a flow chart. Intended for 3rd-12th grade students, this strategy is most effective for students with solid language skills.
A collection of over 50 Social Behavior Maps cover a range of topics for home, community and the classroom. Social Behavior Mapping – Connecting Behavior, Emotions and Consequences Across the Day is geared for use by parents and professionals to help those with social thinking challenges understand what behaviours are expected and unexpected in a way that makes sense to their way of thinking.
“Don’t we all like to know where we’re going? And how we will know we have reached our destination? Sometimes a good map is all we need! Practical, insightful, and functional…A real ‘read and use it now’ book!”

“Michelle Garcia Winner is an expert at recognizing and attending to the core issues of Asperger Syndrome and social understanding. In [Social Behavior Mapping], Michelle introduces a simple, predictable and systematic method of teaching students to better understand how their behavior impacts how other people think about them. This method is a great example of how one can use black and white systems to objectively teach sensitive social realities.”
Kari Dunn Buron, Author of A 5 is Against the Law!, When My Worries Get Too Big, and the co-author of The Incredible 5 Point Scale
“Social Behavior Mapping is powerful! It gives our kids the necessary framework to transform a challenging behavior into a teachable moment. I’ve used it often over the past few years and have witnessed many of my students experience a life-changing “aha” moment. That is what teaching is all about.”
